Lion statues have adorned the entrances of temples, palaces, and tombs throughout the world. They act as guardians in locations as disparate in time and distance as the Forbidden City in Beijing, the New York Public Library, and the necropolis of Saqqara in Egypt, on which this ring is loosely based. Originally hand-carved in wax, this heavy, sculptural piece is cast in solid sterling silver that has been oxidized. The rectangular base on which the guardian lounges measures 3/4" long by 1/2" wide.
